Dulles International Airport Full Scale Emergency Exercise
Saturday May 5, 2018, from 5:30 AM to 1:00 PM
Dulles, VA

Washington Dulles International Airport is hosting a Full Scale Emergency Exercise, simulating an airplane accident, on Saturday, May 5, 2018, from 5:30 AM to 1:00 PM, and is seeking exercise volunteers to participate as simulated crash victims.

Participants may be treated during the exercise by emergency response personnel, placed on medical equipment (e.g. stretchers or backboards), and potentially transported to area hospitals to simulate the full breadth of emergency response activities. Simulated injuries will be visible on pre-selected exercise volunteers. As part of your registration, please indicate if you are willing to be transported and/or would like to have simulated injuries.

The exercise will include a realistic scenario with fire and smoke, for only a short period of time and at a considerable and safe distance from all exercise volunteers. In addition, the use of strobe lights / alarms may be integrated into the exercise scenario.

Exercise volunteers may be required to stand or sit for long periods of time and may be moved to various locations on the Airport property as part of the exercise. All exercise volunteers must be 18 years of age or older and will be required to sign a waiver to participate, including a video, photography and media release. The waiver will be sent via email and will be available to sign on the day of the exercise.

If you are interested in participating in this event, please register through this website and provide your full name, email address, and mobile phone number so that it can be used to contact you the day of and during the exercise. In addition, please answer the required questions.

All participants will be screened by law enforcement and on-site security. You will be prohibited from bringing specific items to the exercise to ensure the safety of all participants. Please see FAQs for the list of prohibited items.

Directions:

Directions to the volunteer parking lot will be provided via email one week before the day of the exercise.

FAQs:

As an exercise volunteer, what will my day entail?

All volunteers must be parked and screened by law enforcement and on-site security no later than their assigned report time. Volunteers will be assigned staggered report times between 5:30 and 7:30 am via email one week prior to the exercise. Once screened, volunteers will board a bus and will be brought to the registration site. Exercise volunteers will register, received simulated injuries and makeup (if applicable), and have the opportunity to enjoy breakfast prior to being transported to the exercise location. Additional instructions and safety information will be provided to exercise volunteers prior to arrival at the exercise location.

Once the exercise is completed, exercise volunteers will be dismissed based on their pre-determined role, with the first group of volunteers finishing around 11 AM. Exercise volunteers will not be permitted to leave the exercise until they have been cleared by first responders and transported to the proper location for check-out. Lunch will be provided afterwards. Exercise volunteers will be transported back to the volunteer parking lot after the exercise and lunch. Exercise volunteers are welcome to bring a book to read while they wait; please no electronic readers. Cell phones are allowed in the exercise area, but videography and photographs are prohibited.

Where do I sign the waiver?

The waiver will be provided to exercise volunteers that have registered through the website one week prior to the exercise. The waiver must be signed and presented before being screened by law enforcement and on-site security. Copies of the waiver will be available on-site.

What can/can't I bring to the event?

Due to the nature of this exercise, the location, and the need to ensure a safe environment, exercise volunteers are prohibited from bringing specific items to the exercise. All exercise volunteers will be screened prior to entering the registration site by law enforcement and on-site security. Prohibited items include, but are not limited to:

  • Weapons (firearms, knives, brass knuckles, batons, asps, bats, and other items)
  • Drugs or alcohol
  • Coolers, food and drinks (water will be provided on-site). If you have any medical or dietary requirements, please contact event staff via email at EmergencyDrill2018@mwaa.com.
  • Backpacks and bags
  • Animals (unless service animal)
  • Electronic readers, such as a Kindle and IPads (cell phones are allowed)
  • Cameras, photographic and video recording equipment (cell phones are allowed)

Law enforcement and on-site security may determine an item is not allowed in the exercise environment if it poses a safety concern or threat. Exercise volunteers will be given the opportunity to store the items in their vehicle prior to entering the exercise area.

All exercise volunteers are asked to lock their belongings in their vehicle prior to leaving their vehicle. Law enforcement and on-site security will be present in the parking lot area throughout the entire exercise.

Is there an age limit to enter the event?

All exercise volunteers must be 18 years of age or older.

What are my transport/parking options getting to the event?

Parking will be provided free of charge. Specific parking instructions will be provided one week prior to the exercise. The parking and exercise areas are not Metro accessible.

What should I wear?

Choose old clothing that is comfortable; be aware that it may be stained or ruined if you are moulaged (adorned with fake injuries) as a "victim" or come in contact with these victims. Women are encouraged to wear a sports bra or bathing suit under their shirts if they will be moulaged. Please ensure you dress for the weather as you will be outdoors for the exercise. The exercise takes place in the morning hours in early May. Weather can range from cold to very warm, with precipitation and/or wind. The exercise will continue regardless of weather, even if there is rain. Please dress accordingly.

May I bring others to this event without registering them?

No. All exercise volunteers must pre-register for the event so we have contact information and an accurate headcount. Please enroll each person individually through the same Eventbrite link. If you have any issues, contact event staff via email at EmergencyDrill2018@mwaa.com.

What if I registered, but I have to cancel?

If you need to cancel, please send an email to EmergencyDrill2018@mwaa.com stating that you cannot attend and would like to cancel your registration. Please do so by 5 PM on April 26, 2018.

Where can I contact the organizer with any questions?

If you have any questions about the exercise, please send an email to EmergencyDrill2018@mwaa.com.
